Have you ever put something back in the wardrobe because the occasion didn’t feel special enough? A hat you love, your favourite shoes or a dress that always earns a compliment. You try it on, then save it for an invitation that hasn’t arrived yet.
I’ve been thinking about how much pleasure we postpone this way. I’m often asked, “Where are you going?” Sometimes the answer is simply lunch. I enjoy getting dressed, and that enjoyment doesn’t always need a grand destination.
You can always restyle an outfit, whether it’s by adding different accessories or pinning on a brooch. Simple changes can make it feel new again.
This November, let’s practise getting dressed up just because.
History corner: the stories in our wardrobes
Who taught you to take pride in how you dressed? Perhaps a grandmother who made her own clothes, a father who kept his shoes immaculate, or an aunt whose hats you still remember.
For this month’s look at Jamaica’s culture of dressing, I’d love to begin with our own family albums. What do those photographs tell us about everyday style, the clothes people treasured, and the care they gave them?

Style spotlight: our Jamaican sister from across the pond
This month, we’re featuring @lifeonmars96, with a closer look at the vintage details in her red floral café outfit.
The dress sets the era. Its shaped collar, gathered shoulders and defined waist evoke early-to-mid 1940s daywear, around 1940–45. The small floral print softens the structure, while the red edging draws attention to the collar.
The accessories make it her own. Her headscarf brings in a second pattern, with pink and purple lifting the red of the dress. Round cream frames and stacked gold-tone bangles add playful touches to the vintage silhouette.
Red runs through the look, from her lipstick and earrings to her ankle-strap, peep-toe shoes. Repeating that colour ties the outfit together. The curved, slatted handbag adds natural texture and a sculptural shape alongside the soft floral fabric.
Something to try with your own wardrobe: pick up a colour from your dress in your shoes or jewellery, then add a contrasting scarf. Familiar pieces, a different mood—and a reason to get dressed up just because.
